Drywall is considered the standard finishing material for interior walls. It consists of an inner core made out of gypsum plaster with a heavy paper cover. Attached to the framing of your walls, drywall covers the insulation, electrical wires, and plumbing. Standard Drywall The most common variety of drywall is the regular fire-coded 4×8 ft. or 4×12 ft. sheet. It comes in in., 3/8 in., in., or 5/8 in. widths. The most commonly used board is in., regular fire-coded drywall. You can also use two layers of drywall for added privacy. However, when determining the size, thickness, and type of drywall to use, you’re not restricted to standard drywall. There are specialty varieties available for areas with specific conditions. Here are 3 specialty types to choose from: Greenboard Greenboard has the same gypsum core as other varieties of drywall, but it is covered in a thicker, more water-resistant paper than standard drywall. The green paper is coated with wax to help control moisture absorption. While suitable for use in rooms with high moisture contents, greenboard is not waterproof and will not discourage mold growth. That said, use greenboard on walls that won’t have direct contact with water; but avoid using it on floors or ceilings. Paperless Drywall Paperless drywall was developed to help prevent the spread of mold and mildew in the home. Paperless drywall still has the gypsum core, but is wrapped in fiberglass instead of paper. Unlike greenboard, paperless drywall is mold resistant. This is considered its greatest asset. In addition to the fiberglass being moisture resistant, the gypsum core is water resistant as well. As a result, the material works well in bathrooms, basements, and any other rooms with higher moisture content. If also works well in homes that are located in humid climates. Soundproof Drywall Soundproof drywall provides a sound barrier comparable to eight layers of standard drywall. Replacing the gypsum core are a combination of viscoelastic polymers, ceramics, and gypsum layered to produce amazing soundproof qualities. The effectiveness of soundproof drywall is measured by sound transmission class levels (STC). Depending on how much you are willing to pay, the panels come as low as 40 STCs and reach up into the 70s. Use soundproof drywall can be used in any room throughout your home where you would like additional privacy, but keep in mind that it is about four times more expensive to purchase than standard drywall. Respiratory issues, other health problems and frequent appliance failures are only a few of the problems claimed to be caused by "Chinese Drywall". Drywall is a flat board made from gypsum plaster. It is used to create interior walls for its economical cost, smooth appearance and fire-resistance. However, it seems that many Florida homeowners are having problems in homes where drywall manufactured in China has been installed

. The housing boom in the early-mid part of the decade has been noted as the beginning of this problem. Normally, drywall is bought from domestic producers, but the boom caused shortages, so some home builders, particularly in Florida, purchased drywall shipped in from China. Only a few years later, in 2009, there appears to be something rotten in the State of Florida. Home owners have reported everything from sore throats to unexplained personality changes in their pets. Everything in between includes: respiratory problems, headaches and nosebleeds, pet ill health, nasty sulfur odors with no apparent source and a general feeling of malaise. Homeowners with young children or those who are expecting are refusing to return to the houses they bought, for fear it might damage their children’s health. Despite the Florida Department of Health’s assurance that there is "no immediate health threat", homeowners remain unconvinced about the "un-immediate" health threats lurking in their homes. The experience of some homeowners, who felt ‘miraculously’ better when traveling away from their residences for an extended period of time, has convinced many that the problem lies within the homes and could constitute a threat to their continued health and safety. One theory is that the drywall isn’t gypsum at all, but a less appetizing mix of waste from power plant scrubbers. This would explain the high content of sulfur-based gases that are being emitted from some of the drywall examined, and for the rapid deterioration of electrical connections and household appliances. Some gases named as being present in tested board include hydrogen sulfide, sulfur dioxide, carbon disulfide, and carbonyl sulfide. Fumes from hydrogen sulfide can cause severe respiratory distress and death.

Sulphur-based gases produce something else when they come into contact with moisture: sulfuric acid, which eats away at many materials like a beaver in an aspen grove. This can explain while many people have gone through three or more appliances in five years when the appliance itself should be lasting for ten or twenty. Air conditioners, TVs and other common household appliances are being affected as well as medical equipment. While not having a TV working can be an annoyance, not having one’s dialysis machine or heart monitor functioning can be serious or even fatal. The drywall problem, combined with other issues relating to toxic materials found in other items produced in China is leading to a demand for tighter regulations and inspections. Also, for provisions that address the needs of homeowners faced with homelessness because they dare not re-enter their homes due to health concerns. Some home builders are addressing this by relocating families while they conduct tests, but many homeowners are fighting with their home builders who say that there is no appreciable health risk. The "Chinese drywall" problem is something we are likely to hear more about in the very near future. Handheld hoppers are great little units for the right environment, and in some cases, the preferred method for the punch out work, patches and small remodels. Mr. John Doe used to spray 4 – 5 homes per month with the handheld hopper and these homes would range from 1500 – 2000 sq ft and normally take him 3 – 4 hours. This is just spraying time, this does not include masking / cleaning / scraping the floors. (and in my conversations with many contractors, that’s actually pretty quick!) Holding up 15 – 20lbs over your head for an extensive period of time gets very cumbersome. Anyway, John and his foreman would spray the homes together and John billed his time out at $75 / hour and his foreman’s time at $37.50 / hour so each hour would be billed a total of $112.50 in labor only. At 3 hours of spraying, that’s a total of $393.75 for 1 house of spraying, which again does not include the masking, clean up and scraping of the floors. Now you multiply this by 4 homes / month and your labor’s costing you $1,575.00 of your hard, sweat driven work. Like I said before, Mr. John Doe at one point started subbing his texture out, the wear & tear on his body was not justifiable until…he decided to get a drywall texture spray rig. This immediately allowed John to bring his texture back inside, cutting costs instantly as well as controlling his spray times better than before. That’s just the beginning, for what it took 3 hours to spray with the handheld hopper, now takes him just 45 minutes with his 200 gas spray rig. Let’s do the math again, at $112.50 billed labor per hour, 45 minutes now costs him $84.38 in spraying time for a 1500 – 2000 sq ft home. That’s a cost savings of $309.37 per house! ($393.75 – $84.38 = $309.37) The cost of financing a 150 or 200 gallon spray rig is approximately $440 per month as of October, 2008! If we run this out for the month then there is a savings in labor of $1237.48 per month! Now the above example is just the savings in labor and this does not account for what he could be doing with his extra time as far as work is concerned, only you can imagine what you would do. I in no way would classify myself as a fire stop expert, not even a novice, but what I do know is you have to start some place! The purpose of any fire stop system is to maintain the integrity of a firewall to prevent the spread of fire and smoke. Notice I said "system". Many contractors simply use fire caulk, just filling any cracks or voids. But you want to use a system. What is a system? There is more to fire stopping than just applying fire caulk and putty. Each manufacturer tests his product and develops a system proving stating that his product, when installed in a certain way will meet certain fire ratings. Many systems will call for a thin wall pipe, most contractors are using EMT, some fire wool and fire caulk at putty. But also note, they will tell you how much fire wool, caulk and putty to use and how much the tube can be filled.

The basic types of product you will use are fire caulk, applied with a caulk gun or moldable fire putty sticks. In addition to that you will find fire pillows, sleeves or pass through devices, mortar and foam products. Again, just don’t by a product and stick it in, you may end up pulling it back out!. Have a system. More and more common in fire stop products, especially in the low voltage field are sleeves with intumescent fire putty built right in. Many contractors prefer these products because of their ease use. While these products tend to be expensive, they are fast to install and are much more fool proof then other types of systems. Abesco products has a round split sleeve that allows it to be used in retrofit applications.

Who makes it?Hilti is probably one of the bigger players in fire stop. They do an excellent job of getting to the architects. Many projects are specified Hilti. 3M, Grace, Abesco and STI (there are many more I know!) also have a full line of fire stop products. Most electrical, mechanical and drywall supply houses handle fire caulk along with most of the big do it you self stores. My disclaimer- Again, I am not a fire stop expert, nor does this article even begin to scratch the surface of fire stop systems or applications. Ah, a finished basement. What a worthwhile remodeling project. Immediately provides additional, usable living space in the home. And, of course with insulating the exterior walls reduces heat escape and thus conserves energy. It can be thought of as a great home renovation project in the winter when folks tend to cocoon more (i.e. stay at home more) because of the inclement weather.

But, what about the ceiling? Should one install drywall on the ceiling with drywall screws attached the ceiling’s support beams, to which drywall mesh & ‘mud’ (technical jargon of home builders / renovators for what is a white paste) is applied to where the drywall boards meet, followed by sanding (drywall dust, yuk!) followed by priming and painting with ceiling paint? Or, should one install a ‘drop’ ceiling with metal rods hung with wires attached to the ceiling’s support beams criss-crossing the basement upon which fire-retardant ceiling tiles are placed? In our basement we have both, but the majority of the basement area uses a hung ceiling.

There is more labour required with a drywall ceiling from start to finish, in my opinion. Hard labour. How do they get the 8 feet by 4 feet drywall sheets attached to the ceiling anyway? Yes with screws, but think about the physical effort. Those drywall sheets are heavy. And then, think about the physical process of applying the mud, and then sanding the mud up on the ceiling. Wow! Painting a ceiling is hard enough. One could say it depends on the look. Do you want your basement to look like a basement? Or, do you want to look like any floor in the house? If the latter you will likely want a drywall ceiling. So part of this is personal preference, ascetics. However, after going through our renovations, I will never install a drywall ceiling in any basement that we may have in our futures that does not have a ceiling already. Why? When you are doing renovations involving wiring and / or plumbing, you will spend countless hours not just running wires and pipe underneath the main floor (which is your basement ceiling), but you will also need to follow along the path of the wires and pipes to figure out what wire goes where and what pipe is used for what. You can’t do that efficiently (and time is the enemy of home renovation projects!) if the ceiling is drywalled unless you break the drywall and then patch it all up again. Also, with new plumbing you need to have access to the pipes up on the basement ceiling. At least in our house we did. Take for example the plumbing for the existing en suite in our home which we renovated for use by a physically challenged family member. It was completely redone and the bathtub placed in a totally different part of the room. Our contractors approach is to put shut off valves for each hot / cold line; a very nice approach. If you have a drywall ceiling, you know what that means; yes, you have to break the drywall. If, however, you have a drop ceiling, all you need to do is to remove the ceiling tile, do your plumbing thing and then re-install the ceiling tile (which takes all of 20 seconds). So, from a renovation / remodeling perspective, my money is on drop ceilings. Having a garage attached to your property is very convenient. However, since we sometimes use the garage to perform not necessarily safe "experiments", and store various flammable materials in that area, the wall separating living quarters and the garage (including wall penetrations) must comply with some important rules. 1. Garage entry door to the house – it needs to be a solid door, wood or metal, with a proper weather stripping to create an air tight barrier between the garage and a living quarters (by law, the door should have at least 20 minute fire resistance rating – no hollow core, interior type doors like the ones that you normally install in bedrooms, closets, bathrooms, etc.). One more feature that I always recommend to my clients, and one that has been required on a new construction in many jurisdictions for several years already, is a self closing door. I don’t think that any local code enforcement division would force a homeowner to upgrade it if it is an older home, and an original (old) door, but I personally think that it makes sense to do such an update for your own sake. It is a very small investment (around $20.00), and all you need to do is replace a couple of regular door hinges with a spring type and a well adjusted door that will fully close automatically. It is for your own safety … I know that nothing bad ever happens to you, but just in case somebody forgets to turn off the car engine and leaves the door between the garage and the living quarters open … you won’t smell Carbon Monoxide …

2. The entry door from the garage into the house should be slightly elevated / higher than the garage floor surface. Many building codes require a step (or curb) between the house door and the garage floor. The step (min 4" recommended, but check your local code) prevents spilled gasoline vapors from entering the house and partially protects residents from carbon monoxide fumes. 3. Garage firewall / separation wall – it would again apply only to the house attached garages. The whole idea is to give you an extra hour of protection (separation wall between the garage and the house is currently required to provide one hour of fire resistance) from the fire that might start inside the garage. In order to achieve this rating, the wall needs to be sheathed with at least 5/8" drywall on each side (from the garage and home side), but check with your local code enforcement division … some jurisdictions will double that thickness. The separation wall should have no missing / damaged drywall sections, any penetration must be sealed (fire rated caulking would be perfect for small gaps around the pipes, air ducts, door frames, etc). If the wall is made out of brick, cinder block, stone, solid concrete, or any othernon-flammable material, you’d just have to worry about penetrations.

4. A forced air heating system distributing air through the house can not have any registers (supply or return) in the garage – older homes often have them, which should be removed and the air duct opening sealed with sheet metal and fire rated caulking. Walls of the metal air ducts exposed in the garage area should be at least 26 ga. steel, no plastic or aluminum (thin wall or flexible type) vent hoses penetrating the separation walls are permitted – if there’s no other way to run those vent pipes, box it out and finish it with 5/8" drywall (Type X, taped). 5. An electrical box installed in the garage should not have another one connected to its back (back to back installation) and open inside the house. Also, some jurisdiction might not allow having an electrical panel installed inside the separation wall. 6. Plasterers In Liverpool: A Different Era When we look back through time and in particular, at tradesmen from many years ago, it is an absolute joy to appreciate the shear skill that these older tradesmen had. It is only when we look at different structures and the way they were built that we can truly appreciate the works of art that were created.

Perhaps to some, describing every day building tasks as a work of art may actually seem a little far fetched and even over-rated, but when we consider the workmanship involved and how these old builders achieved what they did, with what little tools they had, I think term is actually quite fitting. My father was one of those ‘old tradesmen’, a stonemason who indeed was incredibly talented and skilled in construction. In fact, he worked on some of the countries greatest structures in England including the Houses of Parliament, Buckingham Palace and also St Paul’s Cathedral. It was from him that I developed my own skill for working with my hands but it was not working with stone. I developed a love for plastering and trained for several years and worked for many leading contractors before eventually setting up my own building company called 4K Construction Limited. For the purpose of this article though, I would like to talk about plasterers in Liverpool. Drywall, A Common And Very Important Building Material

We have all probably used drywall at one time or another in our lives and we know what it takes to finish the stuff even if we have never touched. We know that it goes on all inside walls and that it won’t hold heavier hangings like shelves and large pictures and so we need to find the studs beneath. We may have also had experience repairing a hole that was intentionally or unintentionally placed in a wall. Plaster work is definitely something that takes practice but thankfully it is sandable and therefore our mistakes are not permanent. But we probably don’t know why it is used, and I am here to change that.

Drywall the most commonly used interior wall covering throughout the world for several reasons. First and probably foremost is that it is cheap. It is simply gypsum which is a ubiquitous and easily obtained substance sandwiched between two sheets of heavy paper which gives the drywall stability.

The material is easy to work with and therefore very useful across a wide range of applications. It also provides a nice finished surface that is very paintable and also repairable. Another reason why drywall is used is that it provides a barrier to the movement of fire through a house or building. Its endothermic properties allow it to at least slow a fires progression and are given to it by the water that is contained within it. This water must be heated and evaporated before the fire is able to raise the temperature of drywall to its kindling point and also affect the temperature of the next room over.

One must keep in mind that it is only a barrier and that in order to prevent the fire from moving quickly from one room to the next you have to block off all other routes. Therefore any vents must be properly insulated, any other holes must be sealed tight by either plaster or some other fire retardant. Drywall comes in 4 x 8 foot sheets and is quickly hung by drywall hangers. This is the process of attaching the drywall to the bare stud of all inside wall surfaces as well as the ceilings. Holes are cut for all receptacles and windows and doors. The mudders then come and tape all of the seams and mud them. This is then sanded down and provides the smooth surface that we are all used to in a new or newly renovated home. Drywall is the most common wall lining of the the modern home. The drywall is glued and nailed/screwed to the timber frame of the house and then the joins are then plastered and sander. During the life of any home damage to the drywall will take place often when the moving furniture or playing indoors.

There are two ways to repair this damage – ring a professional and pay them to repair it or learn how to repair it yourself. Most repairs are quick and easy to do with a few tools to do the job

Plaster Types The first thing you need to know is the types of plaster that are used to do the Job. There are three main types: – Base Coat – A powder that is mixed with clean water to make a paste and used in joints and filling holes – sets hard and is hard to sand. – Cornice Cement – A powder that is mixed with water to make a paste to glue on cornice – smooth tacky paste that set very hard and is hard to sand. – Finishing Compound – This is premixed in buckets and is ready to use directly from the bucket – dries (does not set) and is very easy to sand. – Glass fiber tape – This tape is self adhesive and gives strength to the filling plaster or base coat – only needed on larger holes To repair a hole of damage to a wall you Will only need base coat and finishing compound. Tools: There a few tools that you will need to buy to do the job however these are simple and inexpensive – – One broad knife 250mm (10inch) wide (looks like a wide paint scarper) , one 100mm ( 4inch) broad knife , one 100mm (4inch) x 250mm (10inch) towel. You will also need to mix the base coat for larger holes so an electric drill and paint mixing attachment is best. However the base coat can be mixed by hand but this is slow. For Example: A hole about the size of a tennis ball was made while moving furniture. Step one: Make sure the hole in the drywall is clean (no protruding drywall or paint) mix your base coat power with clean tap water to a paste similar to toothpaste. Note: if the base coat is too wet the base coat will fall out of the hole. If you find the base coat continually falls into the wall cavity fill the behind the hole with newspaper to support the base coat while it sets. Fill the hole using the smaller broad knife making sure the hole is filled and the base coat is flush with the drywall. Step two: When the first coat of base coat is set, Cut a small amount of glass fiber tape to just cover the hole and carefully put into place. Mix up a small amount of base coat and spread over the tape making sure that you spread the base coat beyond the tape. The smoother and flatter the second coat is the better the result will be. Let it set from 45 – 60 Min’s. Step three: Spread a thin coat of finishing compound with the large broad knife and let this dry. The finishing compound must be spread a minimum of 100mm (4inches) beyond the base coat. Step four: Sand your work with 180 grit sand paper making sure you feather or blend the edges with the existing painted wall so that the repair will not be seen when painted. The aim is to sand the repair as flat as you can and blend in the edges . Then your repair is finished and ready to paint. Tip: Remember to wash you tools off with clean water between steps so the plaster does not set on your tools. If you’ve ever tried to fit plasterboard then you will know that one of the most difficult parts is when you have to make the cuts around sockets and things. This is where it all goes wrong for many people and they are left with huge big holes that later become a nightmare to fill and make good.

Wouldn’t it be nice if just for once, you could make one cut and have it fit perfectly first time. Well now you can because I promise you it’s such a doodle when you know how. I’m about to give you a little tip that will save all the rigmarole and make the job a so much easier. All you need to do is hold your piece of plasterboard

up to the wall in the place that you want to put it, then where your sockets, or rather back boxes are (these are the metal boxes that the plastic socket cover with the plug fittings screws into), give the board a good tap and you will make an mark on the back of the plasterboard where the cut needs to be. Simply cut it out with a sharp blade and when you fit the plasterboard permanently in place, you should find that it fits accurately around the socket.

Another way of doing this is also leading the front of the back box around the edges with a pencil before pressing the board up it to get the impression in the right place. Believe it or not, I’ve even known people to mark the socket with ‘tomato sauce’ to make the impression onto the board. Now tomato sauce maybe taking matters a little bit far, but I guess the idea here is to just get that impression on the plasterboard where the precise cut needs to be. Next time you’re taking on a project where you need to fit plasterboard, be sure to try this simple but very effective and time saving method. Please always be cautious and careful when working around any electrical sockets. Where possible, you should always isolate the sockets power supply to ensure complete safety. If in doubt, consult a qualified electrician to do this for you. Skimming is the process by which a thin layer of plaster is applied to a wall or ceiling to provide a smooth surface. Often referred to as board finish, the amount need for a particular job can be calculated based on using 10kg to every 5 sq meters. This assumes plaster is applied to a thickness of approximately 3mm. It’s worth noting that plaster should be stored in a dry place, but it does have a minimum shelf life, so bulk buying and storage might not be such a good idea unless you are using it in large and frequent amounts. As you set about your next plastering job it’s well worth cleaning the plasterboards first. Dust and dirt will create problems so a little time spent in preparation will pay dividends later. If at all possible empty the room or at the very least cover anything of value. Not only do you want to avoid damage to furniture etc, but you also want to be able to move around the room unimpeded, particularly if you’re working on a ceiling which means you need the whole floor space to move around in. When it comes to corners, they need to be properly prepared. External corners are best trimmed with angle beads. Angle beads are galvanized strips, which are simply nailed, with galvanised nails, to the boards. So long as you’ve taken time to square them up with a spirit level, the result is a nice sharp cover. The angle beads can be cut with a small hacksaw or tin snips but it’s a good idea to use protective gloves, as the edges can be fairly sharp. Plaster should be mixed using equal amounts of plaster to water, taking time to mix until a smooth consistency is achieved. A hand whisk can be helpful here. Once the plaster is ready wet the spot board and empty the plaster onto it. A spot board by the way, is just a board of around a meter sq; useful for catching the plaster as you work. A small quantity of plaster should be loaded onto the hawk. Depending on your preference (right or left handed) hold at around chest height and push a measured amount of plaster onto the surface with the float. It takes practice, but you are aiming for a repetitive action which is smooth and fluid. For walls it’s best to work up from the floor spreading a thin layer and then back down again from the ceiling to smooth out the plaster. A second coat can be applied as the first begin to dry a little. This coat should fill in any ridges. A clean float should be used to smooth the whole job. As the plaster starts to harden, again the float can be used as if to polish the surface. Water can be applied with a brush to help when polishing with the float and naturally fill out the smallest of holes. I often overboard lath and plaster ceilings this is because the customer does not want to pay for the time it takes to pull down and old ceiling and clear it up. Due to lath and plaster ceilings normally being full of rubbish and the dust created is unbearable I normally recommend the overboard option.

So With an overboard if the ceiling is lath and plaster I would use 9.5mm plasterboard this would allow for the just not being level as the plasterboard will "go with" the joists. It is also easier to lift 9.5mm board above your head for tacking. So the first ting I normally do I find the joist the best way is to smash a hole in the ceiling with a hammer and have a look, once you have found a joist they are normally 401mm or 601mm apart.

I go round and mark on the wall where all the centres of the joists are then I get a chalk line and run it form one side of the ceiling to the other this will accurately mark the ceiling with the joist centres. This does take a fair bot of time but saves an age of time in the long run. With all the joist marked measuring and cutting the plasterboard is easy as ll you do is measure to the lines and cut. Most rooms are not square so you will find that you will need to do some awkward cuts but that’s is just the way it goes. The tools I use are two props or dead-men which can be bought very cheaply drywall screws a cordless drill for screwing the screws. A chalk line along with a tape measure and stanley knife. Remember that all the screws need to be flush with the board otherwise when the ceiling gets plastered they will catch their trowel and it will leave the screw proud.
